Close Reading - 2/3 Stretch Band
In this 15 minute close reading lesson, we begin to read and analyze the text and illustrations (on the first three pages of Bats on the Beach by Brian Lies. Lexile Level 620. The 2nd grade lexile band is 420-650. This group of readers is reading instructionally at a level 11/12. This lesson is their "stretch scoop" of guided reading. When they are done with this group, they will go to a guided reading group with text at their instructional level. This close stretch reading level lesson is not ideal as each child does not have their own copy of the text in front of them to read, I did not have 10 copies of Bats at the Ballgame. Ideally, they would all have a go at "struggling" a bit through the text reading it first themselves, then untangling it together. Today, I did the reading, and I helped them untangle the text.
Level 3/4 Guided Reading Video - First Grade - Beginning of the Year
This guided reading lesson was done with a group of first graders two weeks into first grade as a training lesson for the TA's here at Lake Myra. During our Literacy block, we utilize all personnel for instructional needs. Our school is year-round, so the school year starts in July. This was their first guided reading lesson of the year. Level 13/14 Guided Reading Video - First Grade - End of 3rd Quarter
The following guided reading lesson was done with a group of first graders in the spring of first grade, all reading about level 13/14. The new book is Mrs. Spider's Beautiful Web. Recorded in March of 2009.
